Book description
Gems are objects of wealth, icons of beauty, and emblems of the very best of everything. They are kept as signs of prestige or power. Given as tokens of love and affection, they also come in a kaleidoscopic array of hues and can be either mineral or organic. Gems can command a person’s gaze in the way they play with light and express rich color. And they can evoke feelings of passion, greed, mystery, and warmth. For millennia, gems have played an important role in human culture: they have significant value, both financially and within folklore and mythology. But just what are gems, exactly? This lavishly illustrated volume—the most ambitious publication of its kind—provides a general introduction to gems and natural gemstones, conveying their timeless beauty and exploring similarities among different species and varieties. Gems and Gemstones features nearly 300 color images of the cut gems, precious and semiprecious stones, gem-quality mineral specimens, and fine jewelry to be unveiled in a new Grainger Hall of Gems at The Field Museum in Chicago this October. The book and exhibition’s overarching theme will be the relationship between finished gems and their natural origin: while beautiful as faceted and polished pieces of jewelry, gems are often just as lovely—or even more so—as gemstones in their natural state. For example, an aquamarine or emerald as originally found in a mine with its natural crystal faces can be as stunning as any cut and polished gem prepared for a ring, bracelet, or charm. Thoughtful of both ancient and modern times, Gems and Gemstones also includes fun-filled facts and anecdotes that broaden the historical portrait of each specimen. When Harry Winston, for instance, donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian in 1958, he sent it through the U.S. mail wrapped in plain brown paper. And for anyone who has ever marveled at the innovations of top jewelry designers, Gems and Gemstones features a dazzling array of polished stones, gold objects, and creations from around the world. Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, amethysts, pearls, topaz, amber—every major gem gets its due in what will be an invaluable source on the subject for years to come. Gems and Gemstones is the basis for the iPad app, available in the Apple iTunes App Store, Gems and Jewels.

Book description
Dark Delicacies III: Haunted is a hard book for me to review. It was very well done technically, but I did not enjoy as many of the stories as I hoped I would. Fundamentally, this is because I dont really care for type of horror showcased in a good number of these stories. In fact, I felt a mild sense of frustration as I read these stories, digging deep to find how the concept of haunted applied to some of the tales. I think that afterword by Mr. Howison probably should have been at the beginning of this book. In this afterward, called One Last Bother, Mr. Howison goes into the rational for choosing the stories in Haunted. He implies that meaning for haunted as applied to this stories is the concept of an event staying on your mind, or memories or visions coming back to seek vengeance. In light of this interpretation, I supposed I can give some slack and accept that this could apply loosely to some of the stories. My lack of enjoyment relates to the fact that many of the commonly used tropes of modern horror do not appeal to me. In fact some of these stories hit my two of my top three no-nos when it comes to horror: 1)serial killer aka human monsters, and 2)cannibalism. I liked to formally add body horror to that list. I really dislike stories with mutilation of the body, whether its self-inflicted or done by someone else. I cant even say which is worse for me.I dislike stories about psychopathic killers wreaking havoc on their victims. Yes, this is horror. However, its not the kind of horror I prefer. I also dont care for stories with mentally ill people performing horrible acts on their person. This is a type of body horror, which gives me the creeps. And last but not least, cannibalism is one of the aspects of horror guaranteed to make me more disgusted than afraid. There were some very creative stories in this volume, in fact, most of the stories were well-written and creative. But few of them were enjoyable to read. You may ask how one can enjoy reading horror. Well I enjoy getting a thrill, the suspense of wondering what is going to happen next. Holding my breath and hoping that the hero makes it out alive. Reading about supernatural occurences that take me outside of my everyday norm. That is great fun for me. The above. Not Fun!So these are the stories I liked (without giving too much away):Mist on the Bayou by Heather Graham--Great story, although there were some pacing issues.A Haunting by John Connolly--Not scary, just sad. But beautiful.A Nasty Way to Go by Ardath Mayhar--A traditional ghost story, just the way I like them. The Flinch by Michael Boatman--Insanely entertaining and horrific at the same time. I want to read more of his stories.Do Sunflowers Have a Fragrance by Del James--Very interesting look at a woman being stalkedThe Wandering Unholy by Victor Salva --Just deserts comes to mind.Man with a Canvas Bag by Gary A. Braunbeck--Very sad, but compelling twist on a ghost storyThe Architecture of Snow by David Morrell--Takes a while for the resolution, but a must read for those who are interested in publishing and the literary fiction world. The other stories werent to my taste or I didnt like the way things unfolded. Be warned because some of these stories are quite disturbing. Not to the degree that I skipped parts, but not for a sensitive reader.I cant say I wasted my money. The fact that I finished this volume in about 48 hours speaks for itself. The writers are all very talented and do know horror. Unfortunately some of them pushed my unhappy horror buttons, so I guess its more me than them. So if you dont have as stringent tastes for your horror, I imagine you will have a lot of fun with these stories.

this book is about five ducks who went far away every day. but one by one they didnt come back, until the fifth day when none of them came back home. so that makes the mother duck sad. the next day she goes and looks for them, and finds all of her five babies.I really like this board book, it is a traditional rhyme turned into a great counting book. I like how it also has very good and easy to look at illustrations. I could use this in my classroom if I was teaching a younger kid to read. the rhyming words would appeal to younger readers. and who doesnt like ducklings.

3.5 sterren. Iets anders? Review first posted at http://twirlingbookprincess.com/

Book description
I’ve been putting off reviewing Nationalism and Culture for quite some time now. While the book has been revered by the likes of Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein, there is such a thorough study in Nationalism and Culture that I simply fear I’m going to get it wrong. But here goes…Written over the span of more than a decade, Nationalism and Culture, is considered Rudolf Rocker’s magnum opus (I honestly don’t know enough about his output to make that claim), and certainly appears to be his most well known work. The underlining theme of Nationalism and Culture is that our current society is purely a human creation. As such, the idea that there is a natural order to things that we can’t control is simply based on false assumptions. Human change to a human system is entirely possible. There are many ideas in the over 500 pages that make up Nationalism and Culture but instead of building, this book mostly deals with critiquing statism, religion, and of course nationalism itself. There is some historical reviewing as well, but given that this is such a lightly referenced book, I am hesitant to consider Rocker’s hindsight on history. However, it helps to understand that Rocker was writing this book as a response to the rise of fascism in Germany, and in doing so spends most of the book refuting ideas that in any way serve to divide the human race. Rocker often makes his point with a great deal of wit, and it’s refreshing to see a book dealing with such complex issues written in a manner that is so easy to follow and simple to understand. Or maybe it’s not that the issues are that complex, but that that Rocker’s presentation is so clear. From the beginning, Rocker is concerned with explaining humanity’s need to rule over others. This of course has to do with the obsession with power, and as separate tribes defeat one another, it becomes more practical to rule over the defeated ones rather than banish them altogether. And so, slavery comes about, and the class system develops. And brutal force is a short term solution for maintaining rule over the subjects, religion is required if one wants a long term effect i.e. the idea that your ruler is part of a “divinely willed mission” and that this idea of dividing the earth into separate nations was the people’s idea and not the rulers. This thirst for power becomes fatal for both ruler and ruled as wars are conducted in order to further consolidate power into the hands of the few, further separating them from the poor, further instilling the belief that in life we have superiors and inferiors. And so, the state is born, nourishing and fostering its own evil existence. The state then functions to maintain its power and does so by creating obedient followers, willing to live within the confines of the state to nurture it. The state has therefore no use for intellectual culture (which is a form of resistance of humans so that they can master their environment) and does what it can to fight it.Rocker’s also provides a brief analysis of German socialism, tracing Marx back to Hegel and Kant and the belief in an unchangeable law, which has given it an unfortunate “authoritarian character.”Then we deal with nationalism (culminating with the birth of Nazi Germany), which Rocker defines as reactionary and enforcing a certain character on the population based on preconceived ideas. But these ideas themselves are based on false presumptions, and Rocker lets loose on the Germans for this. Such as the idea that the Nordic race is pure and superior (when it is actually a mix of races, and actually no Germans fit the bill of a pure “Nordic” appearance), that Germans are the chosen people (brought about by the Romantic School of the middle ages and Fitche’s idea that Germans were a “primary people”) and that German is the purest language (when of course, it borrows from many other languages, as they do as well). And so, one of the greatest forces on earth is founded simply on an illusion. In the end we are presented with two processes: culture and politics. Both going in opposite directions and as Rocker says, “their allegiance is to different worlds.” Since we know that our society is man-made, it should be up to us to create the real world we want to live in. It would only be natural.

Book description
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has run into serious problems with its first big case -- the situation in northern Uganda. There is no doubt that appalling crimes have occurred here. Over a million people have been forced to live in overcrowded displacement camps under the control of the Ugandan army. Joseph Konys Lords Resistance Army has abducted thousands, many of them children and has systematically tortured, raped, maimed and killed. Nevertheless, the ICC has confronted outright hostility from a wide range of groups, including traditional leaders, representatives of the Christian Churches and non-governmental organizations. Even the Ugandan government, which invited the court to become involved, has been expressing serious reservations. Tim Allen assesses the controversy. While recognizing the difficulties involved, he shows that much of the antipathy towards the ICCs intervention is misplaced. He also draws out important wider implications of what has happened. Criminal justice sets limits to compromise and undermines established procedures of negotiation with perpetrators of violence. Events in Uganda have far reaching implications for other war zones - and not only in Africa. Amnesties and peace talks may never be quite the same again.

***UPDATED SECOND EDITION FEATURING NEW SCENES AND COVER*** School psychologists aren’t supposed to write books about sex. Doing so would be considered “unethical” and “a fireable offense.” Lucky for you, ethics was never my strong suit. After spending years trying to spice up my sex life, I gave up and took to my journal. Perhaps my gorgeous, cold, number crunching husband simply wasn’t capable of the kind of passion I’d come to expect. After all, my ex-boyfriends—a skinhead turned US Marine turned motorcycle club outlaw, a baby-faced punk rocker out on parole, and a heavy-metal bass player—were every bit as tattooed and testosterone-fueled as the leading men in my favorite romance novels. If I couldn’t have that kind of passion again in real life, I could at least write about it. Right? Nobody had to know. It would be my little secret. Well, guess what? My husband read that shit. And guess what else? He upped his fucking game. Drunk with power and under the dubious advisement of my best friend and colleague, I began testing the limits—crafting journal entries specifically designed to manipulate Ken’s behavior. For the most part, he responded beautifully…except when he didn’t.

Book description
In print for the first time in the United States, acclaimed novelist Benjamin Markovits’s Playing Days is a mostly autobiographical narrative concerning the author’s season playing minor league professional basketball in Germany and the love affair with another player’s estranged wife that ushers him into adulthood.Growing up in Texas, Ben experienced basketball as a mostly solitary pursuit, one he gave up after riding the bench in high school. But as his college classmates prepare for the real world, Ben is seized by an idea. All he needs is a video camera, an empty court, and his mother’s German citizenship.Improbably, he lands a roster spot on a lower division pro team in Landshut, forty-five minutes outside of Munich. It’s Ben’s first taste of competition in years, not to mention his first job. And like most jobs, it’s defined by repetition, boredom, and gossip. There’s Charlie, the trash-talking mercenary from Chicago; the coach, Herr Henkel, a recently retired player anxious to justify his paycheck; and Karl (based on the author’s real life relationship with Dirk Nowitski), a gangly teenage prodigy flashing the raw talent that will make him an NBA star. As a group of men learn how to navigate one another, Ben falls in love with the young mother of a teammate’s child, and begins an affair that will change his life.Wry, poignant, and tenderly observed, Playing Days is an evocative meditation on the joys of youth, the triumphs and terrors of post-college life, and one of the best books ever written about what basketball can mean to an American man.

Book description
My first real exposure to literature on the Civil War was as a kid of about nine or ten, when I realized that I knew literally nothing about the actual military history of the war, so got a one-volume childrens history of it from the library to get a good basic overview. (Thats one of many books I read as a kid that arent on my Goodreads shelves, because I long ago forgot the author/title information.) Since then, besides treatments of the war in general American history, Ive read a few books or parts of books on aspects of the war, as well as some Civil War fiction (and watched Ken Burns excellent multi-part PBS documentary, the Gettysburg miniseries based on The Killer Angels, and the movie Gods and Generals; I highly recommend all three!) and have enough interest in it to have visited some related sites here in western Virginia, but I dont consider myself an expert on it. This particular book is another one Ive been reading in the bathroom at my son-in-laws house (long story), and is, as the above description indicates, one volume in a major Time-Life series that covers the whole war.The Civil War exerts a peculiar fascination for --even haunts-- American historical memory. In terms of Americans killed, it was the bloodiest war we ever fought; most Americans have ancestors whose lives were affected by it; and it was a very real pivot point of our history (its no accident that 1865 is the usual dividing line between semesters in American history courses.) But more than that, it left a legacy of moral and political issues whose unresolved condition still shapes our political conflicts, and belies the rosy triumphalist view of the conflict usually taught in grade school. Both the hardcore Left and the cultists of the Lost Cause hand down competing simplistic mythologies that reduce the conflict to a crusade of good vs. evil, and that energize and serve as weapons in their ongoing ideological hatreds today (and both essentially spit on any historian who disturbs their myth with unwelcome facts). And many of us who belong to neither camp continually recur to the war as a tragic mirror of the human flaws and mistakes that hung around our nations neck since its founding, that shape our present, and that most people refuse to learn from today. Hopefully not to oversimplify the issues myself, but to put my own view concisely, two principles shape my view of the war and its prelude and ongoing aftermath: slavery and the racism that underlay it were (and are) unqualified and pernicious evils, a curse, an unmitigated curse, for the white race as well as for the black; AND the American constitutional compact between the states was (and legally still is) purely voluntary, and never intended to create a centralized Leviathan-State with absolute power and authoritarian aims. (Given those two assumptions, its pretty clear that I wont be adopting an uncritical, hagiographic endorsement of either side of theconflict, and can point plenty of accusing fingers at both of them.)Chaitin, however, doesnt deal with analysis of the causes and results of the war in all of their messy complexity, nor stake out any brief for either side. His is strictly an objective, factual military history of the usually amphibious coastal campaigns waged from 1861-65, mostly in the Carolinas, but also covering operations in Florida, Mobile Bay, and the New Orleans area. (He mentions the duel between the Monitor and the Merrimac only in a passing one-sentence reference while discussing something else, and doesnt cover any operations on the Virginia or Texas coasts, although both Norfolk and Galveston were more militarily important than most people are aware of; but probably those campaigns are covered in other books of the series.) The author himself is a professional freelance writer who contributed two previous volumes to the series; he had the help of four consultants who actually are experts in the field, and his extensive bibliography included a substantial number of primary sources. As a result, his history is solidly authoritative and often quite detailed; and his style is lively and absorbing. In the Time-Life tradition, the book is also heavily illustrated, mainly with contemporary black-and-white photographs that are themselves primary sources (this was the first major war to be extensively photographed), but also with some color reproductions of paintings, such as those of Confederate soldier/artist Conrad Wise Chapman, who painted many scenes of the defense of Charleston from life. Since Chaitin doesnt employ footnotes (though the book has a good index), this wouldnt be classed as a scholarly treatment; but its certainly a serious one, and aimed at the intelligent reader, in or out of academia, with an interest in the subject. Any such reader will find it informative (I learned a ton of facts I didnt previously know!), and a fascinating, well-written read.

In a scant fifteen years, video and computer games have grown into a $6-billion-a-year global industry, sucking up ever-increasing amounts of leisure time and disposable income. In arcades, living rooms, student dorms, and (admit it) offices from Ohio to Osaka, video games have become a fixture in peoples lives, marking a tectonic shift in the entertainment landscape. Now, as Hollywood and Silicon Valley rush to sell us online interactive multimedia everything, J. C. Herz brings us the first popular history and critique of the video-game phenomenon. From the Cold War computer programmers who invented the first games (when they should have been working) to the studios where the networked 3-D theme parks of the future are created, Herz brings to life the secret history of Space Invaders, Pac Man, Super Mario, Myst, Doom, and other celebrated games. She explains why different kinds of games have taken hold (and what they say about the people who play them) and what we can expect from a generation that has logged millions of hours vanquishing digital demons.Written with 64-bit energy and filled with Herzs sharp-edged insights and asides, Joystick Nation is a fascinating pop culture odyssey thats must-reading for media junkies, pop historians, and anyone who pines for their old Atari.
